ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD
...
“Have the time of your life,”“losing track of time,”“on the company’s time,” and “ahead of their time,” are all common phrases that note various notions of time and how one perceives it. All The Time in the World documents and explores creative ways of expressing or marking time from the specific to the poetic. Featuring artwork by Gail Wight (Associate Professor Art & Art History, Stanford University) and Mary Tsiongas (Associate Professor Electronic Media, University of New Mexico), the exhibit presents many ways we, in fact, measure and perceive time, and in so doing enrich our understanding of them both. Through video, installation, and mixed media the two artists explore the subjective nature of time and show how an understanding of science can influence the practice of contemporary art. All the Time in the World was curated by Arif Kahn and is presented by Wells Fargo. 

 WINTER 2013 ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE

McColl Center for Visual Art presents nine talented artists as the Winter 2013 Artist-in-Residence. Their work will be on display in the 2nd and 3rd floor gallery space and studios. On Friday, January 25, we invite you to join us in welcoming each of the new residents who will be in attendance for the opening reception.

• Katherine Allen, Gail Thomas Peacock Art Teacher-in-Residence: inspired by texture, form, and a love of nature, Allen creates objects of adornment and natural beauty.

• Carolyn Braaksma, CATS Artist-in-Residence: as a public artist, Braaksma executes large-scale commissions that incorporate visual art into infrastructure projects using concrete, steel, and stone.

• Andrea Chung, Artist-in-Residence: explores archival materials such as photographs and tourist publications to reconstruct narratives that sell romantic notions about nature and labor.

• Elizabeth Connor, Environmental Artist-in-Residence: Both a public and studio artist, Conner represents movement and change into works of art that incorporate local stories, conversations and explorations.

• Brian Knep and Natalie Andrew, Carolinas HealthCare Artist-in-Residence: both artists will combine their interests in mythology, journeys, transformation, and notions of magic to create a large, interactive wall piece for the Levine Children's Hospital.

• Joyce Scott, Knight Artist-in-Residence: blending popular culture with her ancestry, Scott creates provocative and confrontational works of art that address contentious political and social issues such as gender, race, and class struggle.

• Erin V. Sotak, UNC Charlotte Artist-in-Residence: is a storyteller whose work is narrated through the use of symbolic colors, iconic objects, cultural references, and historical allusions.

• Mel Chin, Knight Artist-in-Residence: known for the broad range of approaches in his practice, his work is largely motivated by political, cultural, and social circumstances.

WAIT, THERE IS MORE!

McColl Center for Visual Art welcomes the Charlotte Teachers Institute for their 8th Exploding Canons event called, “All the Time in the World.” Three scholars, including Mario Belloni, Physics, Davidson College; Jae Emerling, Art and Art History, UNC Charlotte; and Beth Lasure, Art, Mallard Creek High School will explore the ideas of time, space, nature, science and art in this highly anticipated panel discussion. As we hope you have already heard The Center has moved to a larger and more visible facility in NoDa (2508 N. Davidson St.) and we are excited to share our new space with everyone. At 7p.m. on Thursday, January 24th The Center welcomes you to come by our new location for yourself.

Our new location is twice the size of our old space and now includes three private meeting rooms as well as a larger Great Room with a stage. We believe the new Center will be ideal for all sorts of shows, special occasions, meetings and more. TICKLE ME THURSDAYS COMEDY CONTEST

J.O.E and MSR Presents the "Tickle Me Thursday's" Comedy Contest. The contest will be held Every other Thursday night for six weeks.

 Each week 8 comedians will perform 5mins in front of the audience and 3 guest judges. Judges will be 2 local business owners and 1 local comedy fans. Judges will score the comedians on a scoring system of 1-10 points. In the event there is a tie the tie breaker will be determined by allowing the comedians to perform a 3 minute set for the judges a however, it must be different material.
