Flooded by emotion after hearing Alice Walker speak at Spelman College and learning more about the intention behind this incredible film, I decided to partner with several black women centered organizations to present Nothing but Death can Keep us From it: The Color Purple 30th Anniversary Screening. This event is sponsored by SisterSong, SisterLove and SPARK. We are using the viewing of Walker’s award-winning work to highlight black women led organizations that do the work to organize, build resources for ...
the communities they serve and work to shift policy and culture that use our bodies as key sites for the institutionalization of oppression and marginalization.
Background:
Taking place mostly in rural Georgia, The Color Purple focuses on female black life in the 1930s southern United States and, addresses numerous issues including their exceedingly low position in American social culture. Alice Walker is a daughter of Putnam County, Georgia and speaks for all the Celie’s of the world; many of whom are served today by the organizations sponsoring this event.
Fried Fish and Libations from 5-6
Film screened promptly at 6pm
$5 donation
Special thanks to for SisterSong for hosting the screening at the MotherHouse!
Please use this experience as an opportunity to learn about the work of:
SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective was founded in 1997 as the national reproductive justice organization for Indigenous women and women of color. Our mission is to strengthen and amplify the collective voices of Indigenous women and women of color so that we may secure our human rights, and thus achieve reproductive justice. We fight equally for the right for women to have, not to have and to parent their children in healthy and sustainable environments.
