Atlanta’s Book Club, a modern folk quintet founded by Robbie Horlick (of indie rockers Cassavetes), navigates today’s indie-folk sea with a rare honesty and classicism. The band honors the folk tradition, yet is unbound by it; every song is a fresh take on an old history. Anchored by the rich and sweetly-sung co-ed harmonies of Horlick and Leigh Anne Macquarrie, their arrangements range from that of a lone nylon guitar to songs thoughtfully embellished by cello, double bass, pedal steel, melodica, glockenspiel, saxophone, percussion, and more. Paying simultaneous homage to their traditional, and their modern, influences, Book Club draws easy comparisons to She & Him, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and The Dutchess and Duke one minute, and Patsy Cline, The Carter Family, and Fleetwood Mac the next.

T. Lang Dance was founded in 2006 with the mission of creating dance as a poetic expression, illustrating deep emotion and relevant issues facing women. T. Lang invites the audience into a world that exposes and reflects upon gender issues with depth, honesty, and humor, and angst.

Their newest work is Mother/ Mutha.

Mother/ Mutha delves deep into the complexities of American history. Stripping away the veil of shame, Mother/ Mutha reveals the raw emotion and endurance of African women who were forced against their will to breed slaves.

This work was inspired by the stories of Harriet Jacobs, the sinister Willie Lynch, and the images of the audacious Kara Walker. Revealing the unspoken pain caused by these atrocious acts and the haunting affects on the families.

This story, masterfully blended, thoroughly examines the origin of objectifying African American women. Some known to us all but seldom examined so vividly and honestly through the lens of dance.
