National Poetry Slam

The 2012 National Poetry Slam is coming to Charlotte, NC. It is returning to NC after 18 years. It was held in Asheville, NC in 1994.
This event is the biggest team slam in the world, featuring poets from all over the U.S. & Canada.
You'll see poets perform individually or in groups, using all the skills of storytelling, hip-hop, stand-up-comedy, lyricism, political diatribe, playwriting, and cold hard poetry. The whole premise of slam is to bring poetry to the masses, so judges are selected randomly fro...

m the audience... Which means that even if you aren't a poet, you could be part of the show!
For the first three days of the festival (Tuesday, August 7th, through Thursday, August 9th), poetry will take over 6 venues from 7-11 each night. During these 3 days, the 72 teams will each compete twice in the hopes of garnering high enough scores to qualify for semi-finals!

Stage Door {Corner of 5th and College Streets}
Booth Playhouse seats {130 North Tryon St.}
Knight Theater Lobby {430 South Tryon St.}
Belk Theater Lobby {130 North Tryon St.}
After 3 days of preliminary competition, 20 teams will advance to the semi-finals on Friday, August 10th from 8-10pm at 4 different venues. The top 4 teams advance to the final stage on Saturday, August 11th.

Wells Fargo Auditorium {430 South Tryon St.}
Duke Energy Theater
Stage Door Theater
Friday night ends with the Group Piece Finals at 10:00pm at the McGlohon Theater, where the best multi-voice pieces take the stage.
The competition culminates with the top 4 teams advancing to the National Poetry Slam Finals at the Knight Theater on Saturday, August 11th at 8pm. This event will determine which team will be crowned the winner of the entire competition.
During the course of the festival, you'll also find a huge assortment of workshops, open mics, themed shows, and late-night poetry-themed party events.
